Highlands: The Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships take place in Carrbridge, with competitors from around the world travelling to compete. A Forest Run in Carrbridge will raise money for Mary’s Meals and Mary’s Meals volunteers will be fund raising at the event on Sunday, October 10.

Highlands: Resolis Primary School pupils will be having a porridge ’Making’ at school on Friday October 8 to set them up for their Highland Games in the afternoon. The “Making” is based on a traditional family get together which the Head Teacher remembers from family holidays in Arran. ‘A Making’ usually followed an evening fishing outing. A big pot of porridge was made for everyone and the fish was cooked and eaten with oatcakes and bread. The donations for the ’Making’ will go to Mary Meal’s. On Thursday October 7 the Resolis pupils will all be walking down to Resolis Free Church for a Harvest Service. The collection raised from this will also go to Mary’s Meals.
Edinburgh: The First Minister has invited pupils from Dalmally Primary School in Argyll and St Mary’s Primary School in Leith to join him for a porridge breakfast at Bute House, his official residence, on Wednesday, Oct 6.
Glasgow: Pupils at Holyrood Secondary School will hold a Porridge Day celebration with tastings and fundraising activities. Their event will take place at the same time as one at their twin school in Malawi (CI) which Holyrood pupils visited earlier this year, and we hope to be able to establish a live online link between the two. This will be on Thursday, October 7.
London: An event at Portcullis House at the Houses of Parliament will give MPs the chance to taste porridge and likuni phala, Wednesday October 13.
Highlands: The UK’s highest porridge breakfast will be held at the Ptarmigan Restaurant on Cairngorm Mountain. Visitors will enjoy a hearty bowl of porridge for a donation to Mary’s Meals on Wednesday, October 6.
Highlands: The Mountain Café in Aviemore will serve a selection of oatmeal cookies, cakes and flapjacks to help raise money for the charity, Mary’s Meals on Tuesday, October 5.
Ravenscraig Guest House in Aviemore will be making a donation to Mary’s Meals for every bowl of porridge it sells.
Highlands: Anderson’s Restaurant, Boat of Garten will be hosting an oatmeal themed Pie & Pint Night with fund raising for Mary’s meals. Wednesday October 6.
Highlands: Guests staying at the Old Bridge Inn Bunkhouse over the weekend October 9 – 10 will be invited to tuck into a bowl of porridge in return for a donation to Mary’s Meals.
Highland: An art-house film night with fund raising for Mary’s Meals at the Ord Ban Restaurant Cafe at Rothiemurchs, Aviemore. Sunday October 10.
London: Supporters in Muswell Hill will hold a porridge breakfast at Our Lady of Muswell Hill Chuch on Sunday, October 10.
Lancashire: Parishioners at St Mary’s Church, Oswaldtwistle will hold a special World Porridge Day service, including a specially written sermon, prayers and poetry readings. Children will display a map of the world and place tea lights on countries where Mary’s Meals provides school meals. On Sunday October 10.
Glasgow: Volunteers at Mary’s Meals aid warehouse in Glasgow will enjoy ‘likuni phala’ – the porridge that children receive in Malawi – during their coffee break on Thursday, Oct 7.
Glasgow: Students at the University of Glasgow Mary’s Meals group will host a coffee and porridge morning at Turnbull Hall, Southpark Terrace on Sunday, October 10.
Glasgow: Visitors to Mary’s Meals Open Day at Wellington Church, University Avenue will have a chance to taste ‘liknui phala’ at the event on Saturday, Oct 2.
Argyll: Visitors and residents at Craig Lodge Retreat Centre will enjoy breakfast and different porridge toppings on Sunday, October 10.
Argyll: Pupils at Dalmally Primary School will welcome members of the local community for a porridge-themed assembly followed by a the chance to taste different types of porridge on Monday, October 4.
Argyll: Staff at Mary’s Meals head office in Dalmally will enjoy likuni phala, prepared on an authentic Malawian rocket stove on Friday, October 8.
UK-wide: Charlton House (a catering company) has created several new porridge-based recipes to mark World Porridge Day. The company will donate 10p from all porridge sold at its staff canteens during the week beginning October 11.
INTERNATIONAL
Malawi: At C.I. school in Blantyre, pupils will take part in World Porridge Day celebrations with songs, games and the chance to try different types of porridge. Local businesses will be able to sponsor a pot of likuni phala, the porridge that more than 350,000 schoolchildren eat at Mary’s Meals projects every day. The school will time its party to coincide with one at their twin school, Holyrood Secondary in Glasgow. They hope to link up via the internet. This event will take place on Thursday, October 7.
Malawi: At the Lake of Stars International Music festival in Mulanje, Mary’s Meals staff will provide porridge for children from a local children’s home, who will be performing to an audience of visitors from around the world. Saturday, October 16th. Details tbc.
Romania: Young people who live in Iona House, our children’s home in Targu Mures, will enjoy a porridge breakfast. Details tbc.
Bosnia: Porridge will be on the menu for guests at the Mary’s Meals Café in Medjugorje on Monday October 11.
India: Children at Mary’s Meals biggest Indian project, at Durgawati in Bihar province, will celebrate the work of Mary’s Meals with a day of races, games and activities.
France: Supporters in Dordogne will hold a porridge party with Scottish dancing, porridge, oat scones and flapjacks, on Wednesday, October 13.
USA: Children at Spiritus Sanctus Acadamy in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will mark World Porridge Day and taste different types of porridge.
Sweden: World Porridge Day fundraising event at the activity house “Utkanten” in Malmö, Sweden, Monday 11th ocotber at 6pm.
